BRANDVLEI PRISON FARM: HOT WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM

The Brandvlei hot water spring discharges water at 65°C. This project involved the design and construction monitoring of a pump system and pipeline to pump the hot water 4 kilometers to the prison facility where it is used for domestic purposes. This obviates the need for heating, resulting in considerable energy-saving.

Interesting features of the project were:

• The complexities of pumping water at 65°C which required special consideration of pipe material and equipment.

• The installation of 4N° multi-storage pumps which operate in parallel.

• The installation of a self-cleaning screen filters.

• A system of valves and controls which ensured a minimum operating pressure of 1000kPa throughout the system.
